There’s something about the holidays that urges us to stay inside, get warm and cosy and watch a marathon of Christmas movies. The older ones are so much better than the new releases; but that’s probably because we hold those memories of our childhood so close to our hearts that we’re a little bit prejudiced now.
Here are the unmissable ones for the year!
Home Alone
There’s not a single Christmas movie in the world that could beat Home Alone! No matter how many times you watch the film, and no matter how loudly you mouth the script, Home Alone is by far the best way to start (and possibly end) your Christmas movie marathon.
Love Actually
Another staple for the Christmas movie list has to be Love Actually - what's not to love about watching Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth and Rowan Atkinson, to name a few, all in one film? The British humour will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
It’s a Wonderful Life
A black and white classic that will fill you heart with wonder and gratitude, It’s a Wonderful Life is a 1946 Christmas fantasy set in America. This comedy-drama has five Academy Awards to its name and is a great one to watch on a cold Christmas Eve.
Diehard
You may not believe that this blockbuster holds its water on the Christmas movie list but Amazon’s Alexa seems to think it fits the part. Bruce Willis struts his stuff giving Christmas Eve an action packed adventure that the boys will surely get into. Patience girls, this one’s for them.
Love the Coopers
A new one on the list and now on Netflix, Love the Coopers has such a happy plot where a family gets together for the holidays even though their lives are crumbling. Love and unity keep the family together and the family dog is happy to eat the leftovers and tell the tale of his happy hoomans’ life.
Rise of the Guardian
A cartoon that may not hold the Christmas theme at its core but a great mood setter nonetheless is Rise of the Guardian, with Santa Claus taking on the lead role in the magical characters’ journey into finding Jack Frost’s purpose in every child’s upbringing.
The Santa Clause
Another oldie, another goodie - The Santa Clause is as funny as it is Christmassy. A little boy balances his time with mum and dad for the holidays due to their divorce and this year, it’s dad’s turn to entertain the kid. But his boring Christmas lunch turns into a North Pole adventure.
Miracle on 34th Street
This one’s super cute, mostly due to the Matilda protagonist dominating the screen with her child-like innocence and festive wonder. Get ready for a remake of an even older classic - this 1994 rendition is all about living the Christmas dream even when doubt enters the young girl’s mind.
So many to choose from - you better get started.
