A previously inaccessible site in Ħal Lija, once earmarked for development, has been transformed into a new public open space following the completion of works by Project Green.

Covering approximately 750 square metres, Ġnien il-Larinġ is now accessible to the community and is within a 10-minute walk of around 1,264 residents living in the surrounding area.

Before the works began, approximately 15 tonnes of waste were removed from the site. The project then introduced new accessible pathways, resting areas and a loggia with sanitary facilities, transforming the neglected plot into a welcoming space for residents.

Inspired by Ħal Lija’s traditional community spirit and its reputation for citrus trees, the garden was designed as a place for residents to meet, socialise and relax. Twenty-five additional citrus trees were planted alongside 900 plants and shrubs, including lavender, rosemary, sage and thyme, creating a more colourful and sensory environment.

Historic wells discovered on the site were also restored and will be used for garden irrigation, while sensory pathways made from natural materials and a traditional Maltese-style iron fence add further character.
