The Trojan Horse in Malta? Chris Ebejer recalls designing it for ‘Helen of Troy’ filmed on the island 23 years ago!
Renowned Maltese designer and sculptor Chris Ebejer recently took to social media to reminisce about a pivotal moment in his career - one that left a lasting impact on his artistic journey. At just 23 years old, he was entrusted with the creation of a model of the legendary Trojan Horse for the British-American miniseries 'Helen of Troy', based on Homer’s epic poem 'Iliad'.
The ambitious project was commissioned by USA Cable, quite a responsibility for a young artist at the time! The model was meticulously crafted in a studio set at Fort Ricasoli in Kalkara, a historic location that served as a backdrop for various productions. Once completed, the structure was cast in fibreglass and transported to a studio in Los Angeles, where CGI technology integrated Chris Ebejer’s creation into the film’s epic battle sequences.
Reflecting on the experience, the local sculptor recalls being awestruck by the final scene, where his Trojan Horse played a crucial role in the film’s climactic moments. Now, 23 years later, while filmmaking technology has evolved, his craftsmanship remains immortalised on screen - a testament to his impressive artistic skill and dedication.
