As the month of January unfolds, Dwejra Tower’s Facebook page turns her gaze to the enchanting Mediterranean Heather, known by the scientific moniker Erica multiflora and affectionately referred to as Erika, Leħjet ix-xiħ, or Savina in Maltese.

This evergreen marvel graces the landscapes of the Maltese Islands, adding a touch of natural elegance to the surroundings.

Standing at a modest height of up to 30 cm, the Mediterranean Heather takes the form of an evergreen short shrub or bush. Its distinctive features include erect, hairless branches adorned with needle-like leaves, typically arranged in whorls of three or occasionally five, growing on woody stems.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Mediterranean Heather is its delicate flowers, which manifest as inflorescences – clusters of numerous flowers.

These bell-shaped blossoms, ranging in colour from delicate pink hues to whitish tones, measure between 5 to 7 mm in length. The flowering spectacle unfolds between the months of December and March, gracing the Maltese countryside with a burst of natural vibrancy during the winter months.

Well-suited to the climatic conditions of the Maltese Islands, the Mediterranean Heather displays remarkable resilience. It can endure cold, windy weather and thrive in the arid embrace of Maltese summers.

While it is a common sight on the sister island of Gozo, it is crucial to note that the Mediterranean Heather is a protected species by law. Picking, harvesting, or removing these delicate flowers or plants is strictly prohibited.

In its natural habitat, the Mediterranean Heather flourishes in diverse locations, including areas of garrigue, rocky hills, cliffs, and along valley sides.

Have you ever come across the Mediterranean Heather in its natural habitat?
