To celebrate Francesco Zahra, “Malta’s foremost native painter of the mid-18th century”, Malta Post have issued a set of stamps to commemorate the artist on the 250th anniversary of his death.

Francesco Zahra (1710-1773) was known for his works in many of Malta’s churches done in the Neapolitan Baroque style.

He soon rose to prominence across Malta and Gozo and became the most sought-after artist of his time. His work has even survived in private collections.

To celebrate the life of this incredibly talented artist, Malta Post are releasing three stamps and a sheet portraying four of his oil paintings in his honour.

The issue is set to be released on Saturday, 19th August 2023.

Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria, Gozo is also currently exhibiting the lesser-known works of Francesco Zahra. The exhibition is set to close on 3rd September, so hurry before it is too late!
