Swimmer Neil Agius challenges locals as he preps for record 33hr swim from Sicily to Malta
It's a 95km-long non-stop swim.
Neil Agius, a local long-distance-swimmer-turned-swimming-coach will this year be attempting a feat that has never ever been done before; a 33-hour non-stop swim from Sicily to Malta for the best of causes.
Taking to Facebook to reveal his inspirational plan, Neil described it as "a feat that is yet to be done" and explained that he'll be carrying out the record-breaking swim in Wave of Change's name, an organisation that is dedicated to ensuring cleaner seas and ridding Malta of single-use plastics.
Through his announcement, Neil issued a challenge for residents to undertake: "Wave Of Change Malta is about the many not the few – we’re inspiring people to come together to take action to reduce plastic waste and make waves in the amount of plastic that ends up polluting the Maltese Seas we love so much!" he wrote.
"So we 're asking you to get involved in a challenge (A real challenge) for cleaner seas Malta and cleaner seas," he urged.
The challenge entails picking up three pieces of trash, posting a picture to Facebook of the items with the hasthag #WavesofChange and tagging three friends or companies in the post, for them to do the same. Those tagged then have 24 hours to complete the challenge.
Neil accompanied the post with a video of himself swimming in Mellieha waters, where it took him less than a minute to find three pieces of plastic at the bottom of the sea and safely dispose of them.
Neil is currently following an extreme training regime for the Malta-Sicily swim to be held at the end of the month.
