Spectacular! Kalkara’s 19th century Villa Portelli undergoing full restoration before opening to the Maltese public
Villa Portelli is home to one of the most stunning gardens in Malta.

The 19th century Villa Portelli in Kalkara is finally being restored to former glory! After the restoration works are completed the Villa will be open to the public for all to enjoy.

Villa Portelli’s history traces all the way back to the 18th century when Sir Agostino Portelli, the founding man behind the chamber of commerce in Malta decided to move to the countryside.

After the French oppression in 1798 where the Maltese were fighting against Napoleon’s ruling over Malta, he wanted to stay away from all the conflict and reside in Kalkara instead of Valletta.

The villa was completed in the early 19th century and has been mostly in use ever since then. It was largely neglected after the British left the Maltese islands but today it serves as the Maritime Institute of Malta.

Villa Portelli’s most stunning features include the large gardens overlooking the sea. As a result of the restoration, the gardens will now be fully accessible to the public for relaxation. The gardens will also be the location for many events for all the family to enjoy.

The villa will not just be a musuem, but will also offer many experiences on diverse themes related to Malta cultural history while also giving the opportunity for visitors to learn more about Malta’s maritime culture and history.
