Some things never change! A 1915 photo shows Birkirkara’s Valley Road flooding after heavy rain
Over a century later, Birkirkara’s floods are still very much a thing!

If you’ve been stuck in traffic or detouring around floods this week, you’re definitely not alone, and apparently neither were our ancestors! Local history enthusiast Lino Maniscalco, known for sharing rare glimpses of Malta’s past, has posted a striking photo showing Valley Road in Birkirkara completely flooded back in November 1915.

More than a century later, the scene feels surprisingly familiar.

The image shows a stranded truck in the middle of the road – likely stalled by the rising water – while several people wade through the street, some almost knee-deep. It’s a reminder that Valley Road, which cuts straight through the centre of Birkirkara, has long been one of the island’s most flood-prone spots after heavy rainfall.

And it’s not the only area with a long history of flooding. Msida Creek, another low-lying zone, is notorious for collecting large volumes of water in a short amount of time. So if the rain has been coming down steadily, as it has these past few days, it’s definitely a place to avoid.

More than 100 years on, it seems Malta’s weather woes and waterlogged roads are truly timeless!

Did you have any weather mishaps this week?
