Smoother crossings! Malta - Gozo ferry service to get major upgrade with two new vessels
These vessels are set to enter service in early 2029.
Transport links between Malta and Gozo are on track for a significant upgrade, as the government has revealed plans to introduce two new ferries on the Ċirkewwa - Mġarr route. However, commuters will need some patience, as the vessels are expected to enter service in early 2029.
The new ferries are being designed with fluctuating demand firmly in mind. One of the vessels will be substantially larger, capable of carrying up to 250 vehicles per crossing, an increase from the current maximum of 150, helping ease congestion during busy periods.
A second, smaller ferry with space for 75 vehicles will operate during off-peak hours, improving efficiency when demand is lower. Together, the two vessels are expected to cost around €110 million to build.
While the new ferries are under construction, the existing Gozo Channel fleet will undergo a €20 million retrofit programme over the next six years to enhance performance.
One vessel will be converted into a dedicated cargo ferry, operating between Malta Freeport, Ras Ħanżir and Mġarr Harbour, a move projected to significantly reduce heavy vehicle traffic on Maltese roads.
To ensure continuity of service, a replacement vessel will also be leased during the transition period. Once completed, the full plan, which includes four passenger ferries, a cargo vessel and the Gozo Fast Ferry, is expected to be operational within 44 months.
