Avid theatre-goers will remember the annual tradition of a Shakespeare play being performed by the theatre company MADC on summer nights in the heart of the San Anton Gardens.

This year, ‘The Merchant of Venice’ will be staged between 19-22 and 24-28 July at 8.30pm.

The play is directed by MADC Artistic Director Stephen Oliver, who will also be starring in the main role of Shylock. He will perform alongside Edward Caruana Galizia as Antonio, Julia Camilleri as Portia and Gianluca Mifsud as Bassanio.

Audiences can look forward to some laughs, as the romantic comedy tells the story of Bassanio, an aristocratic but poor young man of Venice, who has fallen in love with Portia, a beautiful and wealthy woman. The plot follows Bassiano as he attempts to obtain money to woo her, along with all the mishaps that follow.

“The Merchant of Venice is Shakespeare’s funny and romantic courtroom thriller, with the Bard at his boldest, most dangerous and most entertaining,” says Stephen Oliver. “As we return to San Anton Gardens for another Shakespeare production under the stars, we invite everyone to experience the magic of live theatre with a timeless story, remarkable performances and an enchanting outdoor setting, which promises to be a highlight of the summer.
