Roman journey! Hamrun statue of St Cajetan enroute to Rome for 500-year anniversary pilgrimage
The anniversary celebrates the founding of the order of the Theatines by St Cajetan himself

Francesca Vella

After the Hamrun celebrations of the feast of St Cajetan (‘San Gejtanu’ in Maltese) a couple of weeks ago, the titular statue has been prepared for its journey to Rome, where it will be part of the 14th September celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Theatine monks.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, a pilgrimage will take place, starting at the Basilica of Sant’Andrea della Valle journeying across Rome’s River Tiber to the Basilica of St Peter in Vatican City. This symbolic ceremony will be supported by the participation of the two bands from Hamrun, namely the St Joseph Band and the San Gejtanu Music Association.

For this special commemorative event, the cross that St Cajetan used to carry with him wherever he went is also being transported to Rome, alongside the statue, after being displayed in the Hamrun feast this month.

This will undoubtedly be a popular event for any Maltese who happen to be in Rome at the time!
