Roads from the past! Photo from 1910 shows the timeless beauty of Nadur’s Dahlet Qorrot
The bay’s name ‘Qorrot’ derives from that of a ship that entered the bay to take shelter from a storm
Those who have visited Dahlet Qorrot, the small bay in Gozo between Qala and Nadur, may remember the isolated country road leading down to the tranquil spot by the sea.
An old photograph that surfaced on social media depicts the very same road back in 1910, with little difference except for the condition of the road itself which has since been adapted to accommodate modern cars.
The area surrounding Dahlet Qorrot is filled with lush countryside, making it popular with hikers both now and seemingly also over 100 years ago, as seen in the photo! The bay itself features picturesque boathouses, and the soft limestone populating the bay is filled with fossils, making the area quite popular with geologists.
The name of the bay itself also speaks of a historical event, as the name ‘Qorrot’ was that of the ship that entered the bay to take shelter from a storm, back in the 19th century. The word 'dahlet' in Maltese comes from the verb 'dahal' meaning to enter.
All in all, a trip to Dahlet Qorrot can provide quite the window into the past of this little corner of Gozo!
