It was Francesca’s first time competing at such as high level at the 34th Palermo Open.

Francesca Curmi has etched her name in Maltese tennis history by becoming the first player from Malta to compete in a WTA main draw. The remarkable achievement came at the prestigious Palermo tournament, where she showcased her immense talent and determination on the international stage.

Francesca, aged 21, competed for the first time at such a high level at the 34th Palermo Open. Cristina Bucsa was a strong foe, but the Maltese tennis player displayed her skill and nearly pulled off a miraculous triumph. In the third set, Francesca had a commanding 5-3 lead thanks to her dominance on the court. She was only two points away from winning her first career Top 100 title, so victory was within her grasp.

In spite of this, Cristina Bucsa persevered and mounted a valiant comeback, narrowly escaping with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

Francesca Curmi, who is just the fourth player from our nation to receive such a WTA ranking after Helene Pellicano, Elaine Genovese, and Kimberley Cassar, continues to demonstrate that Maltese tennis is a force to be reckoned with on the international scene.

Well done, Francesca!
