Revisiting December weather from the past! 2014 brought Malta a freezing minimum of 2.6°C
As Malta heads into a gloomy-looking December, at least as far as the weather is concerned, now’s as good a time as any to take a look at some statistics tied to this month’s weather and hypothesise on whether 2024 will beat any of these records.
The weather page It-Temp Madwarna reminds us that the average amount of rainfall this month is 101mm. However, previous years have strayed far from that amount in both directions, with a whopping 302.6mm in 1970 and an arid 11.2mm way back in 1925.
When it comes to temperatures, the average maximum for the month is 18°C and the average minimum 12°C – both fairly close to what the island is currently experiencing. However, December 2010 saw an unusually warm 24.6°C, while just four years later, temperatures dropped to a chilly 2.6°C! It was in December 2014, in fact, that Malta experienced its closest brush with snow in recent memory.
