Rescue mission! Malta Ranger Unit saves turtle Coral found entangled in debris
Coral was spotted by some people fishing in Mellieha

Francesca Vella

While patrolling near the Red Tower in Mellieha, rangers from the Malta Ranger Unit came across a group of expats fishing who had discovered a turtle tangled in debris.

Acting quickly, the rangers contacted the Wildlife Rescue Team and arranged for the injured turtle to be transported to the rehabilitation center at Xrobb L-Ghagin Nature Park. Upon examining the turtle - later named Coral - the team sadly found severe injuries, including a deep cut on her right front flipper and a dangerous constriction on her left front flipper.

Coral is now under the expert care of resident vet Dr. Gruppetta, who is working tirelessly to save her left flipper. However, her recovery will depend on how well she responds to treatment in the coming days.

The Wildlife Rescue Team urges anyone who spots a wild animal in distress to contact them immediately via their emergency number, 99999505. They also remind the public that all rescued animals are protected species, and keeping them as pets is illegal under Maltese law.

Hoping for Coral’s speedy recovery!
