Remember this? A year ago today, Malta experienced one of 2021’s BIGGEST storms
This autumn is set to be much drier…

Around this time a year ago, the Maltese islands were struggling to keep up with the copious amounts of rain falling upon them…

The storms of 2nd and 3rd October 2021 marked the beginning of autumn on the islands and brought about some well-needed cool weather – but at what cost?

Well, certain towns around the islands – particularly Xlendi in Gozo – suffered a considerable amount of damage as a result of the storms’ sheer strength.

Local weather page ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ took to social media the day after the storm to share some insight about this meteorological event’s aftermath.

For starters, the overnight storm produced a whopping 69.55mm of rain – 37.8 of which were dumped in just 11 minutes, between 3:28am and 3:39am.

“The temperature dropped from 23.6°C to 17.9°C during the thunderstorm” and “wind gusted up to 56.3 km/h” at its peak, the page had written.

“Taking into consideration the thunderstorm on Friday [1st October] night as well, the climatic average for October has been exceeded, just three days into the month,” ‘Maltese Islands Weather' added.

As it turns out, we’re expecting a much drier autumn this year.

‘Possible showers’ are only forecast on two days this week – Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th October. Every other day until Sunday 9th October is set to be ‘partly cloudy’, the Malta International Airport’s meteorological office predicts.

Temperatures are also set to remain on the warmer side throughout the week, with highs of 25°C and 26°C predicted throughout the week. Luckily, it’s set to get as cold as 18°C at night from Wednesday 5th October to Sunday 9th.
