Refreshing! Sea temperatures drop below average across Malta & Gozo after cooler start to August
The unusually fresh end to July and start of August hasn’t just been felt on land, it’s brought waves of change in the sea, too!
According to local weather page It-Temp Madwarna, the past 11 days of cooler-than-average temperatures, combined with strong winds and sea currents, have brought a notable drop in sea surface temperatures around the Maltese Islands, enough to bring them below the typical seasonal average.
This is a sharp contrast to conditions earlier this summer. Back in June, the Mediterranean was experiencing a marine heatwave, with sea temperatures hitting 28°C – 5°C above average – due to an unusually hot start to the season.
Now, thanks to this recent cooler spell, sea temperatures have dropped to around 25°C, which is 2°C below the seasonal norm for August.
So, if you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment for a refreshing swim, this might just be it! Especially with air temperatures expected to rise again in the coming days, a cool dip in the sea might be the best way to beat the heat.
