Ramla rescue! Tiny Tim the baby turtle saved from Gozo’s Ramla nest due to injured flipper
Baby turtles could have quite a perilous journey into the sea when they hatch

Francesca Vella

Last week’s hatching of turtle nest 3 provided the incredible total of 81 hatchlings, as shared by ERA over the weekend. However, one of the hatchlings had to be saved from the journey back to sea, and taken to the Xrobb l-Ghagin Nature Park and Wildlife Rehab Centre, as it seemed to be struggling in its movements.

On closer inspection, it was found that the baby turtle had hatched with a bifurcated front flipper, making forward motion and swimming properly very difficult. This motion is particularly important for the hatchlings to make their way to the sea, as they’re encouraged to do on their own, and can sometimes be in the peril of land predators while doing so.

The vet that checked Tiny Tim recommended further observation at the centre to keep an eye on the situation and the turtle’s condition before releasing him back into the wild.

Wishing all the best to Tiny Tim for his journey back into sea!
