Poor babies! Two hoglets too young to survive on their own rescued by Nature Trust from Gozo
They will be released back into the wild once they are old enough.
During this past weekend, Nature Trust’s Gozo section got two separate calls about two little hoglets who were in desperate need of help as they were too young to survive on their own.
The first tiny hedgehog rescued was named Dolly and was found in the middle of the road in the village of San Lawrenz. Her eyes were still closed, and no mum or siblings were in sight.
When there is no mother to take care of the babies, the chance of survival is very little so Dolly was taken in by Nature Trust until she will be able to take care of herself in the wild.
The second hoglet, Andrea, although a bit older was found in Qbajjar but is also still too young to survive on her own.
“We appeal to the public, if you come across a small hedgehog on their own in the road, please do not just move it to a field. Often these hoglets have gotten lost or separated from their mothers, and are too young to survive on their own”, Nature Trust Gozo wrote on their social media.
“Please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505 and we check if the hedgehog is old enough to be in the wild alone. If not and if the mother cannot be found, we will take the hedgehog in until it is old enough to be released back in to the wild”, they continued.
They also reminded the public that most hedgehogs are lactose intolerant and should never be given cow’s milk.
