Pietà from the past! Vintage photo shows the old boathouse before it became a restaurant
A peaceful moment frozen in time

Francesca Vella

Pietà is often one of the busiest areas in Malta, bridging the hubs of Valletta and Msida, and sees thousands of cars everyday. But it wasn’t always that way! Lino Maniscalco has recently shared a photo that provides quite a throwback, showing the old boathouse that stood at the creek before it was turned into a restaurant.

Until the early 2000s, the boathouse had been in a deteriorating state but still served its purpose for boat owners who used it to store their vessels. The exact year this black-and-white photo was taken remains unclear, but the architecture of the buildings across the road and the classic black and white feel of the image suggest it was captured pre-1970s.

The photograph evokes a sense of calm and simplicity, with a couple of men gazing out at the tranquil sea - a stark contrast to the frenetic pace of life we see in the area today! One can almost feel the slow, peaceful rhythm of life before the busy traffic and modern developments took over.

Why not take a leaf out of their book and pause for a moment to enjoy the view of the sea today?
