Peace amid chaos! 1940s photo captures a moment of calm at Luqa airfield during wartime Malta
A rare picture of peace at the war airfield

A black-and-white photograph recently shared by Lawrence Marsh on Facebook captures a rare moment of faith and unity during World War II at Luqa Airfield. In the midst of war, British soldiers gather for an outdoor service, with a priest leading the service from the back of a military vehicle – quite an unusual pulpit! The image, likely from the 1940s, shows a rare moment of peace as troops seek solace through worship.

Malta played a crucial role in the war, enduring relentless bombing raids due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean. It’s heartwarming to see that despite the hardships that they undoubtedly experienced, soldiers and civilians alike found strength in their faith and resilience.

Can you recognise the Luqa airfield?
