New year, clean bay! Żibel kicks off 2025 with the removal of 756kg of waste from Kalkara Bay
Starting the year the right way!

Over the weekend, the NGO Żibel held its first clean-up event of the year, starting at the southeast of Malta at Kalkara Bay. They began with a bang, managing to collect an impressive 756.2kg of waste, with discarded tyres making up a staggering 534.3kg – over 70% of the total haul!

In a commendable display of responsibility, the group of volunteers cleaned and checked each and every tyre for wildlife before throwing it in the skip, ensuring all sea creatures found were safely returned to the water.

The waste picked up comprised 69.7kg of fishing gear, 3.5kg of plastic, 120.4kg of glass, 19.8kg of metal and 542.8kg of mixed waste, predominantly tyres.

A massive well done to Żibel and the volunteers for their tremendous effort to protect Malta’s coastline. Let this serve as a reminder of how much waste ends up in the sea, and how important it is to treat our waters and their inhabitants with care and respect.

Here’s to a cleaner, greener future for Malta!
