New UK travel requirement! Maltese nationals must apply for ETA from April 2025

If you plan on travelling to the UK from this April onwards, here's some information you need to know!

Starting on 2nd April 2025, all Maltese nationals will be required to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK, even though no visa is required for stays of up to 180 days. The application process will open on 5th March 2025, giving travellers a chance to prepare for this new requirement.

Here’s what you need to know about the new ETA system:

Cost: £10 for the application.
Validity: The ETA will be valid for 2 years, providing multiple entries during that period.
Exemptions: The ETA is not required for those with a UK visa, settled or pre-settled status, or those holding an Irish passport.
Common Travel Area: The ETA is still necessary for those entering from outside the Common Travel Area (which includes the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man).
Visa Holders: If you need a visa for your stay, you do not need to apply for an ETA. The visa will cover your travel requirements.
No refunds: Once you apply for the ETA, no refunds will be provided if you change your travel plans or make an error in your application.

Who needs an ETA?

Anyone travelling to the UK, including babies and children, will need an ETA - no one is exempt. You can apply on behalf of others, ensuring that everyone in your group is covered.

What can you do with an ETA?

With an approved ETA, you can:

Visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study.
Travel for up to 3 months under the Creative Worker visa concession.
Go to the UK for a permitted paid engagement.
Transit through UK airports if you pass through border control. If you do not pass through border control, the ETA will not be required, but it’s always a good idea to check with your airline to confirm whether you need to clear border control.

As travel requirements evolve, this ETA system introduces a streamlined process for most travellers, making it easier to enter the UK for short visits. However, it’s essential to ensure that you apply for your ETA in advance and verify any travel details with your airline, especially if you plan to transit through a UK airport.
