A new chapter is unfolding for two of Gozo’s historic cultural sites, as Heritage Malta prepares to transform the current Gozo Nature Museum and Gozo Museum of Archaeology into part of a larger, state-of-the-art Gozo Museum.

Located within the historic Ċittadella, both museums will gradually close to make way for restoration and repurposing.

Parts of the Gozo Nature Museum will shut from 20th March, while selected areas, including Natura 2000 displays and the garden, will remain temporarily open free of charge. Housed in interconnected 17th-century buildings, the site holds a rich past, having served as an inn and even a wartime shelter during World War II.

The Gozo Museum of Archaeology will follow, closing on 13th April. Situated in a historic townhouse once used by the Knights of St John, it later became Gozo’s first public museum and a key home for archaeological collections.

Following restoration, both buildings will take on new roles, including administrative functions and fresh visitor attractions linked to the Ċittadella. These changes pave the way for the new Gozo Museum, which will unite the island’s diverse heritage under one roof, offering an immersive cultural experience.
