Nature’s beauty! Southern Green Shield Bug spotted at Simar Nature Reserve in Xemxija
This bug is believed to have originated in Ethiopia and now lives mostly in tropical and subtropical regions
The Simar Nature Reserve in Xemxija – located just behind the seaside area known for its kiosks – is home to many weird and wonderful creatures, one of which is the Southern Green Shield Bug. As its name suggests, this insect’s shield has a characteristic green colour, some containing patterns similar to those found on a butterfly’s wings.
This insect goes by quite a few names. In Maltese, it is referred to as ‘Spallut Ahdar’, while in the US it is called the ‘Southern Green Stink Bug’, while Australians and New Zealanders usually call it the ‘Green Vegetable Bug’.
This bug is believed to have originated in Ethiopia, but can now be found all over the world, living mostly in tropical and subtropical regions. It can usually be found on wild and cultivated plants and is considered a pest for potatoes and certain species of legumes, such as beans and soybeans.
