MP Claudio Grech says mass events should stop, appealing for “common sense & a lot of responsibility”
Mass gatherings are getting backlash after a spike in cases was announced this weekend.
Nationalist MP Claudio Grech is appealing for mass events to be stopped, criticising the government that has been promoting gatherings of the sort as part of the tourism sector’s post-covid regeneration.
“A few weeks ago, everywhere you’d look you’d see the Maltese flag to show our appreciation for the healthcare worker’s work and their sacrifices during the COVID-19 crisis. The success in the fight against Covid-19 didn’t come by chance but thanks to the hardwork of these professionals,” he says in a post on Facebook.
“It is evident that for the economy to recover, we need to open up the tourism sector, but trying to address the problem with parties of the sort where large amounts of people congregate, is certainly unwise during this time,” he continued.
We all saw what one party can do, Grech noted, appealing for “common sense and a lot of responsibility before it is too late” and consequences become fatal: both from the health and economic perspectives.
This comes after a large cluster of cases resulted from the Hotel Takeover event in St Julian’s, which also resulted in another event of the sort at the same hotel to be cancelled.
A number of entities have spoken out about the issue with organising mass gatherings, including the Malta Medical Association, the Kamra tal-Ispizjara, and the Malta Association of Public Health Medicine. “High-risk gambling with the health of the Maltese people is unacceptable,” the MAM said in a statement, with the other entities also expressing concern over the organisation of such mass events.
