If you love exploring Malta’s countryside, chances are you’ve come across a curious blue flower with olive-like leaves. Meet the Olive-Leaved Germander - known in Maltese as ‘Żebbuġija’ - a hardy evergreen shrub that thrives in Malta’s dry and rocky landscapes.
Named Plant of the Month by the voluntary organisation Din l-Art Ħelwa, the Żebbuġija is a common sight in garigue areas, along valley edges, against rubble walls, and even in exposed coastal spots. Basically, if the ground is rough and dry, this little plant is right at home!
If you do happen to spot this plant while out and about, it's likely to be found covering a sizeable patch of land - it’s a spreading plant, meaning it can grow to cover an area of up to four metres wide! Its velvety white shoots, glossy aromatic leaves (hence the olive-related name), and delicate pale blue flowers make it easy to spot.
If you're hiking anytime between December and June, keep an eye out for this Mediterranean beauty. But don’t get too close - its flowers are a favourite among bees and other pollinating insects!
