Fascinated by maps and atlases? The new exhibition ‘Cartographia’ at the National Library of Malta in Old Treasury Street in Valletta, just behind the Queen Victoria statue, to feast your eyes on some of Malta’s most historically significant maps available.

Premiering at last Saturday’s Notte Bianca, this exhibition is now on display daily (except Sundays) at the National Library of Malta, as part of the Malta Map Society’s hosting of the 41st IMCoS Malta International Symposium, titled ‘Imago Melitae 2024’.

Featured exhibits include several Lafreri atlases, the unique Antonio Saliba world map, the Cavalleris map of the Battle of Lepanto, Robert Dudley’s ‘Arcano del Mare’, the rare Spanish edition of the ‘Atlas Maior’ by Johannes Bleau, and the Perez d’Aleccio and Lucini albums depicting maps of the 1565 Great Siege.

One of the rare manuscript maps being exhibited for the first time is on loan from the Bank of Valletta, who this year, are also celebrating their fiftieth anniversary. The other rare exhibit which is not from the National Collection and is being displayed for the first time, is the original copperplate of one of the Perez d’Aleccio’s Siege maps.

The exhibition will be on display till Saturday 16th November, opening at 9am-4pm on Monday to Friday and 9am-midday on Saturdays. Entrance is free, but make sure to bring an official identification document as it will be required to enter the premises.
