Maltese wine “vying for recognition on the international stage” according to Country Life
Malta has done it again, this time, in the wine department! Maltese wine has been featured in Country Life, with writer Sophia Constant taking a trip to our islands to discover it for herself. And, obviously, it didn't disappoint.
“Malta has become an attractive destination for those seeking a warm climate, turquoise waters and dramatic history,” she says, noting the booming wine scene on our islands, which is “vying for recognition on the international stage.”
Constant delves into the history and culture of Maltese wine making, fascinated by the fact that until 30 years ago, our islands only produced wine from table grapes. But that has all changed now. Maltese and Gozitan wines have become more refined with each passing year, and they've been a hit among tourists, who describe them as “genuinely something different and among the most interesting in Europe.”
The writer visited Meridiana Wine Estates (Attard), Mar Casar (Siġġiewi), and Ta’ Mena (Gozo), where she was welcomed to wine-tastings, paired with local cheeses. We all know what ġbejna paired with wine does to our taste buds! She tasted various local wines, including the Gozitan Ceres 2017 Sauvignon Blanc/Viognier, which she describes as having “a slightly salty aftertaste from the sea spray that reaches the vines nearest the cliffs,” and which pairs beautifully with a plate of fresh seafood.
What do you think? Are you a fan of Maltese wine?
