Olive oil is not merely a culinary staple in Malta, but a cherished tradition deeply ingrained in its culture. The Department of Information just posted some beautiful photos on their social media, treating their followers to a visual feast, showcasing the beauty and significance of Maltese olive oil. These photos provide a glimpse into the rich history and unique qualities that make Maltese olive oil a culinary treasure.

Malta's olive oil heritage stretches back an astonishing 2,000 years, strengthening its enduring appeal in the country's cuisine. The images reveal ancient olive trees still in use, some dating back to Roman times when olive oil production was an integral part of the island's culture.

These trees were cultivated in villas that had specially designated areas for pressing olives, emphasising the enduring tradition of olive oil production on the island.

Malta's Mediterranean climate provides an ideal environment for olive cultivation. However, what truly sets Maltese olive oil apart is its proximity to the sea. The constant exposure to the briny sea air imparts a unique character to the olives, resulting in a product that is fresher, saltier, and tangier than olives grown in larger countries.

These photos beautifully capture the essence of Malta's olive oil heritage.
