Maltese are everywhere! Australian Bureau of Statistics shares top suburbs for people with Maltese ancestry
It’s no secret that the Maltese diaspora is spread far and wide, and the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has just proven it. The top suburbs in each Australian state and territory for people with Maltese ancestry show how deeply rooted the Maltese community is across the country.
Topping the list is Llandilo in New South Wales (NSW), where an impressive 27.9% of residents have Maltese ancestry - that's over 1 in 4 people! This is just one example of how the Maltese presence is strongly felt across Australian suburbs - unsurprising given the mass exodus of Maltese to the down under in the 70s.
Other notable areas with significant Maltese populations include:
- Habana (QLD) – 11.5%
- Hillside (VIC, Cities of Brimbank and Melton) – 11.1%
- Woodville Park (SA) – 1.5%
- Macarthur (NSW) – 1.1%
- Virginia (SA) – 0.7%
- Beverley (SA) – 0.7%
- Westbury (TAS) – 0.7%
These statistics give a glimpse into how the Maltese community has not only shaped Australia’s cultural landscape but also maintained strong connections to their heritage. Whole communities exist all over Australia, where Maltese heritage is remembered and even celebrated - reflected even in Facebook groups such as Maltese Culture and Heritage NSW.
Whether you’re in the bustling suburbs of NSW or the quieter streets of Queensland, you’re likely to encounter someone with a familiar accent, or maybe spot a Maltese flag flapping in the wind!
