Malta's youth leads the way! 143kg of waste collected at Mistra Bay
Cleaning up the island, one bay at a time

Francesca Vella

Good news for Malta’s beaches: the Islands Cleanup 2025 is officially underway! This year’s campaign was launched in a cleanup led by students and backed by the Ministry for the Environment, Energy, and Public Cleansing in collaboration with Saving Our Blue, Project Green, and the Cleansing and Maintenance Division.

Responsible for the initiative was 12-year-old nature lover Thomas Gatt, a student at St Michael’s Foundation, who brought forward the idea of creating an environmental organisation ‘by children, for children’ after a meeting with the Environment Minister.

The campaign launched earlier than usual with a successful cleanup at Mistra Bay in the north of Malta, where children, accompanied by employees from Malta’s workforce, joined forces to collect an impressive 143 kilograms of waste. From plastic bottles to fishing debris, all the collected material was sorted and weighed according to Malta’s waste-separation regulations, with recyclable items sent for proper processing.

This annual initiative is open to private companies, schools, NGOs, and anyone else looking to make a difference while contributing to their corporate social responsibility. Participants are provided with all the tools and safety gear needed – all you need to bring is the enthusiasm! After every cleanup, groups receive a certificate of participation, as a token of appreciation for their efforts.

Which beach would you choose to cleanup?
