His grit and skill in breaking a world record have been recognised on a global scale!
Open-water swimmer Neil Agius made history last September when he shattered the world record for the longest unassisted, current-neutral ocean swim. Covering an astonishing 142.3 km in 60 hours, 35 minutes, and 4 seconds, he swam from Mellieħa Bay to Għar Lapsi, leaving the nation in awe.
Now, the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) has officially recognised his extraordinary achievement, awarding him Gold for Performance of the Year and Silver for Man of the Year - a double honour that cements his place among the sport’s greatest.
During his acceptance speech for Performance of the Year, Neil reflected on his journey, recalling that his first ultra-distance swim in 2018 covered ‘just’ 70 km around Malta. The contrast between then and now highlights the sheer magnitude of his latest feat. Grateful for the unwavering support of his team, the open-water swimming community, and his supporters, he hinted that this may not be the end of his record-breaking swims, teasing, 'Who knows?'
A well-deserved congratulations, Neil!
