Were you aware that sunbeds being left out at night could be dangerous for our hard-shelled friends?
Local beach guardian and park ranger Cami Appelgren called on Malta’s seaside deckchair operators to be a tad more responsible…
Taking to social media, Cami shared an image, captured by Mike Herron, of a lone turtle trapped beneath a deckchair left out overnight.
“To all sundeck chair operators being blessed to leave sundeck chairs out during night time (crazy stuff). May this not be what is seen on a morning patrol somewhere along our beaches,” the concerned ranger wrote.
“I can't find even one reason for anyone to be allowed to leave sundeckchairs out during night hours or if there is no demand from the public. If we really wish to safeguard the marine life and other wildlife this wouldn't be allowed. Your convenience isn't more worth than their well-being,” she added.
Cami went on to urge private vendors to consider how their practices may impact local ecosystems and marine life, advising them to opt for more sustainable practices, whenever possible.
The HPF Ranger Unit, i.e. the entity which Cami is a part of, is in charge of conserving and patrolling all of Din L-Art Helwa and Nature Trust Malta’s sites.
