Historic fare! Malta’s history through bus tickets from the past
The tickets had different colours depending on their value and journey length

Francesca Vella

Anyone who roamed the island before 2011 can tell all about the colourful buses that circled the Maltese streets, but do you remember the old paper bus tickets?

The Department of Information has shared images of some bus tickets that many won’t remember, in a currency some might have already forgotten. Before Malta adopted the euro in 2007, the decimal currency had been used since 1972, with 100 cents to every Maltese lira and 10 mils to every cent. Some of the oldest tickets on display show a value of just 5 mils!

The most recent bus tickets shown in the photos sport different colours, varying depending on the value of the ticket, and show the transitory phase between currencies, showing both the Maltese Lira and Euro value on the ticket.

These were the last tickets used before the major restructuring of Maltese public transport in 2011 brought more modern buses, and a few years later, adopted reusable cards for residents on the island, waving goodbye to the nostalgic paper tickets!

Do you remember any of these bus tickets?
