Malta International Music Festival 2018: highlights to look out for
The Malta International Music Festival is going strong, with fantastic classical music events set to take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre until the end of this month. Look out for these highlights!

Tonight, April 21st, 8pm: THE WELL TEMPERED CHANSON
A cycle of musical pieces, potpourri and metamorphoses inspired by smash-hits of the Soviet era written by the Maltese composer Alexey Shor with songs illustrating a time of radical changes and social drama, underlined by the dark, colourful and velvety sound of the viola which Alexey Shor chose as the leading instrument. The famous American violist David Aaron Carpenter will perform this programme, accompanied by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Sergey Stadler. Ticket information.

April 22nd, 8pm: THE GREAT SIEGE
A joint concert by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sergey Smbatyan. "Its legendary images echo the impressive pages of another magnificent piece – Spartacus by Aram Khachatyrian – the Mediterranean sea, the powerful heroes and the fierce fighting – both masterpieces tell the story of the most outstanding drama-filled pages of world history." Ticket information.

April 23rd, 8pm: TRAVEL NOTEBOOK PIANO CONCERTO
In Denis Kozhukhin's debut in Malta, the pianist presents a very poetic piano concerto, a kind of musical diary called Travel Notebook by Maltese composer Alexey Shor. Winner of the first prize in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels at the age of 23, Denis Kozhukhin has established himself as one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Kozhukhin’s performances have been praised by critics as “spellbinding”, “imperious” and “mesmerising”. Ticket information.

April 24th, 8pm: LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING!
Famous opera arias, operetta and musical hits together with music by Alexey Shor, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles with Lyuba Kazarnovskaya (soprano). Lyuba Kazarnovskaya's stay in Malta will be not only to sing, but also to direct, as she will be shooting a documentary on the festival’s events and participants, which will be covered by Russian TV channels. April 25th, 8pm: MAXIM VENGEROV
One of the biggest names in the classical music world, Maxim Vengerov is hailed as the world’s greatest living violinist. As the special guest of the Malta International Music Festival 2018, he will bring his international star power to the Republic Hall stage in a performance of the Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, performed by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Armenian conductor Sergey Smbatyan. April 26th, 8pm: SEASCAPES
Regarded as one of the hottest violinists on the international circuit, Ray Chen will perform the complex, original version of Alexey Shor’s Seascapes for violin and orchestra. Ticket information.

April 27th, 8pm: THE LEGEND BACK IN MALTA
In his second Maltese concert, Grigory Sokolov - "the king of piano" - will be playing three sonatas of Joseph Haydn, which have their minor key in common, which Haydn rarely used. Ticket information.

April 28th, 8pm: THE ROMANTIC VIOLIN
The Romantic Violin presents Salvatore Accardo (Violin) with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sergey Smbatyan. "His playing is characterised by a taut, visceral tone and a disciplined musical approach that avoids self-indulgence. Having also established himself as a successful conductor, chamber musician, and teacher, Accardo may be considered one of the most accomplished and influential musicians of his generation." April 29th, 8pm: TRIO KHACHATURYAN
The Khachaturian Trio is praised by the critics for its virtuosity, sense of style, quality of sound and musicality. The trio has recorded five CDs, focusing on Armenian and Russian music. Members of the trio are involved in teaching master classes in music schools all over Armenia. Ticket information.

April 30th, 8pm: THE MAGIC CELLO
The Magic Cello presents Narek Hakhnazaryan on cello with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tigran Hakhnazaryan. "Since winning the Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 at the age of 22, Narek Hakhnazaryan has performed with most major orchestras and in recitals across the globe, establishing himself internationally as one of the finest cellists of his generation."
