A stellar performance!

The Malta weightlifting team, made up from Tenishia Thornton, Rylee Borg and Kim Camilleri Lagana completed the IWF Junior World Championships in Guadalajara Mexico on a very positive note.

Kim Camilleri Lagana, the first Maltese athlete on stage had a good performance in the 45A category, lifting 58kg in the Snatch and 75kg in the Clean and Jerk. She ended the competition in the 10th position.

Tenishia Thornton had a very strong start in the 64B category.  In the Snatch she lifted 82kg, moving to 85kg and closing successfully with 87kg. This successfully placed her in 3rd place. Thornton also broke the Malta junior and senior National records. In the Clean and Jerk, she started confident at 102kg, but she missed the 105kg due to a press out on her left elbow. This competition was very important for Thornton since she is peaking up for the Olympic qualification event in Doha in less than three weeks.

Last Maltese athlete in these championships, category 81B, was Rylee Borg. He had a stellar performance. Borg opened the snatch at 108kg, missing the 111kg but he moved on to a successful 112kg. In the Clean and Jerk he opened at 135kg and moved to 139kg. He had good challenge against Croatia athlete but finally Borg had a good win by successfully lifting 142kg. In this competition Borg had a personal best on total with 8kg and broke all national records in the 81kg Youth and Juniors.

The talented team was under the coaching of Jesmond Caruana.

Congratulations to the whole team!
