Library days! Decades-old photo takes us back to a Malta when books outnumbered screens
The magic of libraries still exists!

Francesca Vella

Do you remember the days when a trip to the library meant a gateway to new adventures just waiting to be experienced in your mind’s eye? A nostalgic photo shared by the Department of Information shows this precise moment, with schoolchildren in their uniforms excitedly milling around the bookshelves and poring over potential books to take home with them.

Back then, before the age of computers and smartphones, and when televisions were considered a luxury few could afford, books provided the only means of escape into fictional worlds.

The role of libraries has shifted since then, with the DOI post reminding the public that, despite the massive shift in technology since that photo was taken, Malta Libraries is finding new ways of keeping that love for reading alive, offering not only physical books but also a vast collection of e-books and digital resources. So why not visit your nearest local library and discover what’s waiting for you?

Do you remember this kind of library excitement?
