Malta International Airport started the year on a strong note, recording 507,574 passenger movements in January, marking a 9% year-on-year increase.

In fact, according to reports released by the airport, Italy continued to dominate the airport’s market leaderboard, accounting for 20.8% of total passenger traffic.

The United Kingdom maintained its second position with a 13.9% market share, while Poland once again outperformed Germany to claim third place for the third consecutive month. Poland secured a 13.2% share, driven by increased capacity on Polish routes operated by Ryanair and Wizz Air, along with the extension of Ryanair’s Katowice route from summer into the winter season. Germany and Spain rounded out the top five, contributing 7.0% and 6.0% of the airport’s market share, respectively.

The busiest day of the month was 4th January, as the post-holiday travel surge saw 165 scheduled and charter flights transporting over 27,000 passengers.

Malta International Airport concluded 2024 with an impressive 8.96 million passenger movements, reflecting a nearly 15% growth over 2023. The expanded flight schedule, connecting the Maltese Islands to 109 destinations, played a crucial role in achieving this milestone.

Significant infrastructure investments throughout 2024 contributed to this success. The airport inaugurated four new aircraft parking stands as part of the Apron 8 South project. Security enhancements included the introduction of CT scanners at the Security Screening Area, while a new baggage reclaim belt improved efficiency and passenger experience.

Malta International Airport’s commitment to service excellence was recognised by Airports Council International, which awarded it the prestigious ‘Best Airport’ title. The airport also advanced to Level 4 of the Airport Customer Experience Accreditation, highlighting its dedication to continuous improvement.

On the sustainability front, 2024 was a landmark year. The company published its first Net Zero Carbon Plan and progressed to Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Additionally, a €4 million photovoltaic farm project was launched in the final quarter of the year.

With strong passenger growth, strategic investments, and a commitment to sustainability, Malta International Airport is set for continued success in 2025 and beyond.
