Have you crossed over from Malta to Gozo recently? You’re not alone!

The second quarter of 2024 saw an increase in sea crossings between Malta and its sister island Gozo when compared to the same period last year. From April to June, over 11,000 crossings carried almost 1.8 million passengers. May was the busiest month, with almost 4,000 trips accounting for 35% of total trips for the three months.

The Mġarr to Ċirkewwa route had just over 1.5 million passengers, having decreased slightly from last year, but vehicle transport increased by 2%, totalling over half a million vehicles.

As expected, traffic statistics from the first half of 2024 showed Friday and Saturday to be the busiest for both passenger and vehicle traffic in Cirkewwa, while Mgarr Harbour was busiest on Saturdays and Sundays.

The fast ferry carrying passengers from Valletta to Mgarr and vice versa also experienced an increase in both trips and passengers in the last three months, when compared to the second quarter of 2023. Trips increased by 5%, totalling over 2,000 crossings, while passenger numbers saw an increase of a whopping 40%, with over 252,000 passengers in the last three months.
