Island at a standstill! Heavy traffic reported across central Malta
Kappara, Msida, Qormi and Marsa are among the most severely hit locations

Traffic has become part of the Maltese people’s order of the day, yet today’s congestion has reached an unprecedented high.

Photos of long lines have been making the rounds on social media since late morning, yet they have continued accumulating over the past few hours, with multiple localities now afflicted by slow moving traffic.

The University and Mater Dei areas are amongst the worst hit, with traffic accumulating from both the Birkirkara bypass and beyond the Kappara junction. Their meeting point, Msida Skatepark, is also immobilised in both the direction of Marsa and Msida marina.

Heavier than usual traffic is also reported on Triq Dicembru 13 direction Marsa, with the nearby town of Qormi also suffering from the congestion.

Traffic was also heavy on the Coast Road direction St Julians earlier this afternoon.

Comments posted on social media are attributing the traffic to Marsa's flyover project, with only one lane open to service Paola and Fgura. It is believed that beams are currently being attached to the third flyover which was opened last week. Due to the bad weather conditions, the work could not be completed earlier.

Let us know if more areas are hit!

When she’s not having a quarter-life crisis, Caroline is either drawing in a café, frittering her salary on sushi or swearing at traffic in full-on Gozitan. There is also the occasional daytime drink somewhere in the equation. Or two. A creative must be allowed at least one vice.
