Is this one of the oldest bathrooms in Malta? Check out this Roman ‘forica’ in Ghajn Tuffieha
A photo taken by Daniel Cilia and shared onto social media by ‘8000 Years of Water’ shows a latrine room that was discovered at Ghajn Tuffieha.
The latrine or bathroom, dates back thousands of years and could perhaps be one of the oldest one in Malta. They referrered to as the ‘forica’.
As explained by ‘8000 Years of Water’, this shows how much the Romans valued hygiene. Even though they lived thousands of years before us they were already living quite similarly to the way we do today.
In fact, the Roman Empire were already making use of sewage and plumbing systems.
The ‘forica’ found in Ghajn Tuffieha was part of the roman bath complex in the area, which continues to show the Romans ingenuity in engineering.
“Situated within a complex that required significant water for various rooms, especially the caldarium or steam room, the inclusion of a latrine highlights the comprehensive planning involved in Roman bathhouses”, 8000 Years of Water explained.
