Incredible! Malta’s Chantal Busuttil nominated for Best Period Make-Up at 2025 Guild Awards for ‘Gladiator II’
Malta continues to shine in the film industry, as the talented local make-up and SFX artist Chantal Busuttil is part of the team nominated for the ‘Best Period and/or Character Make-Up’ award at the 2025 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards! Chantal shares this prestigious nomination with her colleagues in the make-up department for the highly anticipated 'Gladiator' sequel released last month, including make-up designer Jana Carboni, along with Charlie Hounslow, Maria Solberg Lepre, and Lauren Baldwin.
The competition is fierce, with other nominees including the artists behind 'Wicked', 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice', and 'Deadpool & Wolverine' – truly listed among the stars!
Chantal shared insights into the demanding but rewarding work involved, explaining that the team was responsible for preparing extras and horse riders for director Ridley Scott’s set daily. With a crowd ranging from 600 to over 900 individuals per day, their tasks included applying tans, dirt, prosthetics, blood effects, and other intricate details to bring the epic story to life.
The team’s efforts involved gruelling shifts during filming, spanning the months between 2023 and 2024, including quite a rush toward December 2023 following the months that filming stopped, due to the strike going on in Hollywood at the time.
