Increased nesting expected this summer! Loggerhead turtles make a return to Malta's beaches
ERA urges the public to report sightings.

As the first day of summer nears, the sandy shores of the Maltese islands are attracting not only tourists but also loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) seeking nesting sites. This year's nesting season, which began in May and concludes in August, is expected to witness an increase in turtle nests across Malta and Gozo.

In fact, the first turtle nesting site of this season was spotted at the end of last week at Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay) during a routine morning patrol by Nature Trust Malta (NTM-FEE) volunteers. ERA officers immediately went on-site to assist and cordoned off the area to ensure the protection of the nest.

These gentle creatures are a wonder to behold, but it’s crucial to maintain a respectful distance. Bright lights, flash photography, and loud noises can disrupt the turtles’ nesting process.

The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), supporting Nature Trust-FEE Malta, is leading patrols and monitoring efforts on known nesting beaches such as Ramla Bay in Gozo and Golden Bay in Malta. Trained wardens and ERA officers are working together to identify and safeguard turtle nests from potential disturbances.

Everyone can contribute to the protection of these turtles. By reporting sightings and nests to Nature Trust-FEE Malta or ERA, you can help ensure that Malta's beaches remain safe havens for these magnificent creatures, aiding in the conservation of their populations in our seas.

If you or someone you know encounters a turtle or discovers a nest, you can contact ERA at +356 2292 3500 or visit era.org.mt. You can also contact Nature Trust-FEE Malta at +356 2131 3150.

We can all pitch in to safeguard these turtles!
