In good hands! Women in Marsaxlokk seen carrying statue at Madonna ta’ Pompei feast
Not a common sight…

Emma Galea

If you visited the Marsaxlokk feast this past Sunday, chances are you came across a sight that is not very typical of any other feast you have went to.

This is the sight of women carrying Marsaxlokk’s titular statue of the Madonna ta’ Pompei back in the church when this in act usually reserved for men.

Such a tradition has been carried out for years, but it seems to have only caught on in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk and nowhere else in Malta or Gozo.

We wonder how such a tradition came to be!

Do you think more villages should adapt this tradition?
