Impressive! Malta’s longest ‘liedna’ made in Zabbar breaks national record at 653 metres
Bringing some festa fever!

Francesca Vella

Missing the summer ‘festi’? Over the past weekend, a group of talented men have brought back some of the spirit of the village feasts synonymous with the Maltese summer by creating Malta’s longest ever ‘liedna’ – a garland cut out of plastic, of various shapes and sizes – measuring at a whopping 653.96 metres!

The ‘liedna’ is usually used to decorate village streets during the festa period and can be made entirely by one person or by a team. This record-breaking garland was created by the Commission of Decoration within the Philharmonic Society Maria Mater Gratiae in Zabbar.  The monumental task took the dedicated team 67 hours and 30 minutes to complete, with the ‘liedna’ being made in four separate lines.

The sea of blue ‘liedna’ spread out in front of the team is a reminder of the festa fun to come in just a few months!

Well done to the entire team!
