Hot, hot, hot! Maltese waters reach 30°C due to marine heatwave
Sea temperatures averaged at 30°C.

Emma Galea

If you decided to have a dip in one of Malta and Gozo’s beautiful beaches but you did not feel quite as refreshed as you usually do, this is because Maltese waters are experiencing a marine heatwave.

This lead to waters reaching 30°C at the sea surface across the Mediterranean, preventing swimmers from cooling off as much as they want to.

The average temperature in the first 10 metres around the Maltese Islands is currently at 28°C / 29°C”, the local weather page ‘Maltese Islands Weather’ reported.

This not only impacts the swimmer’s ability to cool off but it also negatively effects Malta’s marine ecosystems.

Since not many organisms are adapted to living in such hot temperatures, they can suffer immensely or die.

It can also lead to certain alien species to thrive instead and cause harm to Malta’s indigenous species.
