Summer is officially here – at least, according to meteorologists! Yesterday, Sunday, 1st June marked the start of meteorological summer, and Malta is wasting no time turning up the heat.

While astronomical summer doesn’t begin until 21st June, meteorological seasons are based on temperature patterns, dividing the year into four three-month blocks. Meteorological summer spans from June through August – typically Malta’s hottest months – and judging by this week’s forecast, we’re diving straight in.

The start of the week brings a gradual climb in temperatures, with the real feel expected to reach around 32°C by Thursday, thanks to calmer winds and plenty of sunshine. But that's just the warm-up! Friday’s real feel is set to rise to 34°C, and by Saturday, brace yourselves for a sizzling 36°C.

Nighttime temperatures will be on the rise too, starting at a refreshing 17°C at the beginning of the week, and reaching 22°C by Saturday, marking an entire 5°C increase. Get those fans (or air-conditioners) ready!

Also climbing with the temperatures is the UV index, which will hit a whopping 10 by Thursday – right at the top of the "Very High" category. By peak summer, we could see it reach 11 (or higher), indicating extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure.

So if you’re planning a beach day (and who could blame you?), don’t forget to pack the essentials: plenty of water, a wide-brimmed hat, and generous, frequent applications of sunblock. You’ll also want to avoid the worst hours of the sun, which are between 11 AM and 4 PM. With conditions like these, staying sun-smart is just as important as soaking up the rays.

Ready for the summer heat?
