Happy Republic Day! Here’s all you need to know about one of Malta’s most important holidays
Today Malta is celebrating 48 years since it officially became known as the Republic of Malta but why exactly do we celebrate?
After 164 years of English Colonial rule, Malta was declared as an independent nation back on the 21st September, 1964 but it was still not a republic country as the head of state was still the Queen of Malta, Queen Elizabeth II.
That is until the 13th December, 1974 the constitution was revised, abolishing the constitutional role the Queen still held in Malta. Soon after, Malta's first president, Sir Anthony Mamo was elected.
Ever since then Malta has been celebrating this incredible achievement in the country’s history.
To celebrate, Malta gives a sensational firework display over the Grand Harbour in Valletta. Additionally, on the day the President presents awards to those who have served Malta and represented the country in an impeccable manner.
However, the big event that people look forward to the most is the traditional trooping of the colour ceremony and parade that takes place in St George’s Square Valletta every year.
The Presidential colour is trooped through the ranks of the Armed Forces with the salute being taken by President George Vella since he holds the position as the commander in chief of the AFM.
