Happy Commonwealth Day! Maltese writer Leanne Ellul to speak at today’s celebrations at Westminster
Today, countries around the world, including Malta, are celebrating Commonwealth Day, a day dedicated to the unity and shared values of the Commonwealth nations.
Commonwealth Day is observed annually, bringing together 53 countries that share a historical bond through their connection to the British Empire. Malta has been a member of the Commonwealth since 1965 and has hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) twice. Malta also serves as the base for COMNET-IT, the Commonwealth’s Information and Technology network.
This year’s celebrations will take place at Westminster Abbey in London, and there’s a special reason for Malta to celebrate! Maltese writer Leanne Ellul has been selected as one of four remarkable women to speak at the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration. Leanne, alongside Cynthia Wakuna (Commonwealth Says NO MORE), The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC (Commonwealth Secretary-General), and The Hon Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa (Prime Minister of Samoa), will share her inspiring voice at the event.
The service will be held today at 3:30 PM (Malta time, GMT+1). For those who want to join in the celebration from afar, the service will be live streamed on YouTube here.
Earlier today, the Royal Family sent their wishes to the 56 nations of the Commonwealth, marking the day with a message of solidarity and shared purpose. The day also includes milestones like the launch of The King’s Baton Relay and the official countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which is 500 days away! Additionally, the inaugural Commonwealth Peace Prize will be presented, further celebrating the spirit of unity and peace.
Congratulations, Leanne!
